1 ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἰησοῦς ἐξῆλθεν σὺν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ πέραν τοῦ χειμάρρου τοῦ κεδρὼν ὅπου ἦν κῆπος, εἰς ὃν εἰσῆλθεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.

2 ᾔδει δὲ καὶ ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν τὸν τόπον, ὅτι πολλάκις συνήχθη ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖ μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ.

3 ὁ οὗν ἰούδας λαβὼν τὴν σπεῖραν καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ ἐκ τῶν φαρισαίων ὑπηρέτας ἔρχεται ἐκεῖ μετὰ φανῶν καὶ λαμπάδων καὶ ὅπλων.

4 ἰησοῦς οὗν εἰδὼς πάντα τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἐπ᾽ αὐτὸν ἐξῆλθεν καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, τίνα ζητεῖτε;

5 ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῶ, ἰησοῦν τὸν ναζωραῖον. λέγει αὐτοῖς, ἐγώ εἰμι. εἱστήκει δὲ καὶ ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν μετ᾽ αὐτῶν.

6 ὡς οὗν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, ἐγώ εἰμι, ἀπῆλθον εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ ἔπεσαν χαμαί.

7 πάλιν οὗν ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτούς, τίνα ζητεῖτε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, ἰησοῦν τὸν ναζωραῖον.

8 ἀπεκρίθη ἰησοῦς, εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι· εἰ οὗν ἐμὲ ζητεῖτε, ἄφετε τούτους ὑπάγειν·

9 ἵνα πληρωθῇ ὁ λόγος ὃν εἶπεν ὅτι οὓς δέδωκάς μοι οὐκ ἀπώλεσα ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐδένα.

10 σίμων οὗν πέτρος ἔχων μάχαιραν εἵλκυσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἔπαισεν τὸν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δοῦλον καὶ ἀπέκοψεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτάριον τὸ δεξιόν. ἦν δὲ ὄνομα τῶ δούλῳ μάλχος.

11 εἶπεν οὗν ὁ ἰησοῦς τῶ πέτρῳ, βάλε τὴν μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην· τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέν μοι ὁ πατὴρ οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό;

12 ἡ οὗν σπεῖρα καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται τῶν ἰουδαίων συνέλαβον τὸν ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸν

13 καὶ ἤγαγον πρὸς ἅνναν πρῶτον· ἦν γὰρ πενθερὸς τοῦ καϊάφα, ὃς ἦν ἀρχιερεὺς τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου·

14 ἦν δὲ καϊάφας ὁ συμβουλεύσας τοῖς ἰουδαίοις ὅτι συμφέρει ἕνα ἄνθρωπον ἀποθανεῖν ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ.

15 ἠκολούθει δὲ τῶ ἰησοῦ σίμων πέτρος καὶ ἄλλος μαθητής. ὁ δὲ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος ἦν γνωστὸς τῶ ἀρχιερεῖ, καὶ συνεισῆλθεν τῶ ἰησοῦ εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως,

16 ὁ δὲ πέτρος εἱστήκει πρὸς τῇ θύρᾳ ἔξω. ἐξῆλθεν οὗν ὁ μαθητὴς ὁ ἄλλος ὁ γνωστὸς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ εἶπεν τῇ θυρωρῶ καὶ εἰσήγαγεν τὸν πέτρον.

17 λέγει οὗν τῶ πέτρῳ ἡ παιδίσκη ἡ θυρωρός, μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν εἶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου; λέγει ἐκεῖνος, οὐκ εἰμί.

18 εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ δοῦλοι καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται ἀνθρακιὰν πεποιηκότες, ὅτι ψῦχος ἦν, καὶ ἐθερμαίνοντο· ἦν δὲ καὶ ὁ πέτρος μετ᾽ αὐτῶν ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος.

19 ὁ οὗν ἀρχιερεὺς ἠρώτησεν τὸν ἰησοῦν περὶ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς αὐτοῦ.

20 ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῶ ἰησοῦς, ἐγὼ παρρησίᾳ λελάληκα τῶ κόσμῳ· ἐγὼ πάντοτε ἐδίδαξα ἐν συναγωγῇ καὶ ἐν τῶ ἱερῶ, ὅπου πάντες οἱ ἰουδαῖοι συνέρχονται, καὶ ἐν κρυπτῶ ἐλάλησα οὐδέν.

21 τί με ἐρωτᾷς; ἐρώτησον τοὺς ἀκηκοότας τί ἐλάλησα αὐτοῖς· ἴδε οὖτοι οἴδασιν ἃ εἶπον ἐγώ.

22 ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς παρεστηκὼς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἔδωκεν ῥάπισμα τῶ ἰησοῦ εἰπών, οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῶ ἀρχιερεῖ;

23 ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῶ ἰησοῦς, εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ· εἰ δὲ καλῶς, τί με δέρεις;

24 ἀπέστειλεν οὗν αὐτὸν ὁ ἅννας δεδεμένον πρὸς καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα.

25 ἦν δὲ σίμων πέτρος ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος. εἶπον οὗν αὐτῶ, μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ εἶ; ἠρνήσατο ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν, οὐκ εἰμί.

26 λέγει εἷς ἐκ τῶν δούλων τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, συγγενὴς ὢν οὖ ἀπέκοψεν πέτρος τὸ ὠτίον, οὐκ ἐγώ σε εἶδον ἐν τῶ κήπῳ μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ;

27 πάλιν οὗν ἠρνήσατο πέτρος· καὶ εὐθέως ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν.

28 ἄγουσιν οὗν τὸν ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ καϊάφα εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον· ἦν δὲ πρωΐ· καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον, ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν ἀλλὰ φάγωσιν τὸ πάσχα.

29 ἐξῆλθεν οὗν ὁ πιλᾶτος ἔξω πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ φησίν, τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε [κατὰ] τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου;

30 ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῶ, εἰ μὴ ἦν οὖτος κακὸν ποιῶν, οὐκ ἄν σοι παρεδώκαμεν αὐτόν.

31 εἶπεν οὗν αὐτοῖς ὁ πιλᾶτος, λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς, καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑμῶν κρίνατε αὐτόν. εἶπον αὐτῶ οἱ ἰουδαῖοι, ἡμῖν οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἀποκτεῖναι οὐδένα·

32 ἵνα ὁ λόγος τοῦ ἰησοῦ πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνῄσκειν.

33 εἰσῆλθεν οὗν πάλιν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ὁ πιλᾶτος καὶ ἐφώνησεν τὸν ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῶ, σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν ἰουδαίων;

34 ἀπεκρίθη ἰησοῦς, ἀπὸ σεαυτοῦ σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις ἢ ἄλλοι εἶπόν σοι περὶ ἐμοῦ;

35 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ πιλᾶτος, μήτι ἐγὼ ἰουδαῖός εἰμι; τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί· τί ἐποίησας;

36 ἀπεκρίθη ἰησοῦς, ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου· εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἦν ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμή, οἱ ὑπηρέται οἱ ἐμοὶ ἠγωνίζοντο [ἄν], ἵνα μὴ παραδοθῶ τοῖς ἰουδαίοις· νῦν δὲ ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐντεῦθεν.

37 εἶπεν οὗν αὐτῶ ὁ πιλᾶτος, οὐκοῦν βασιλεὺς εἶ σύ; ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἰησοῦς, σὺ λέγεις ὅτι βασιλεύς εἰμι. ἐγὼ εἰς τοῦτο γεγέννημαι καὶ εἰς τοῦτο ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον, ἵνα μαρτυρήσω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ· πᾶς ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀκούει μου τῆς φωνῆς.

38 λέγει αὐτῶ ὁ πιλᾶτος, τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια; καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν πάλιν ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς ἰουδαίους, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, ἐγὼ οὐδεμίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῶ αἰτίαν.

39 ἔστιν δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν ἵνα ἕνα ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν ἐν τῶ πάσχα· βούλεσθε οὗν ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν βασιλέα τῶν ἰουδαίων;

40 ἐκραύγασαν οὗν πάλιν λέγοντες, μὴ τοῦτον ἀλλὰ τὸν βαραββᾶν. ἦν δὲ ὁ βαραββᾶς λῃστής.

1  When Jesus²⁴²⁴ had spoken²⁰³⁶ these words,⁵⁰²³ he went forth¹⁸³¹ with⁴⁸⁶² his⁸⁴⁶ disciples³¹⁰¹ over⁴⁰⁰⁸ the³⁵⁸⁸ brook⁵⁴⁹³ Cedron,²⁷⁴⁸ where³⁶⁹⁹ was²²⁵⁸ a garden,²⁷⁷⁹ into¹⁵¹⁹ the which³⁷³⁹ he⁸⁴⁶ entered,¹⁵²⁵ and²⁵³² his⁸⁴⁶ disciples.³¹⁰¹

2  And¹¹⁶¹ Judas²⁴⁵⁵ also,²⁵³² which betrayed³⁸⁶⁰ him,⁸⁴⁶ knew¹⁴⁹² the³⁵⁸⁸ place:⁵¹¹⁷ for³⁷⁵⁴ Jesus²⁴²⁴ ofttimes⁴¹⁷⁸ resorted⁴⁸⁶³ thither¹⁵⁶³ with³³²⁶ his⁸⁴⁶ disciples.³¹⁰¹

3  Judas²⁴⁵⁵ then,³⁷⁶⁷ having received²⁹⁸³ a band⁴⁶⁸⁶ of men and²⁵³² officers⁵²⁵⁷ from¹⁵³⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ chief priests⁷⁴⁹ and²⁵³² Pharisees,⁵³³⁰ cometh²⁰⁶⁴ thither¹⁵⁶³ with³³²⁶ lanterns⁵³²² and²⁵³² torches²⁹⁸⁵ and²⁵³² weapons.³⁶⁹⁶

4  Jesus²⁴²⁴ therefore,³⁷⁶⁷ knowing¹⁴⁹² all things³⁹⁵⁶ that should come²⁰⁶⁴ upon¹⁹⁰⁹ him,⁸⁴⁸ went forth,¹⁸³¹ and said²⁰³⁶ unto them,⁸⁴⁶ Whom⁵¹⁰¹ seek²²¹² ye?

5  They answered⁶¹¹ him,⁸⁴⁶ Jesus²⁴²⁴ of Nazareth.³⁴⁸⁰ Jesus²⁴²⁴ saith³⁰⁰⁴ unto them,⁸⁴⁶ I¹⁴⁷³ am¹⁵¹⁰ he. And¹¹⁶¹ Judas²⁴⁵⁵ also,²⁵³² which betrayed³⁸⁶⁰ him,⁸⁴⁶ stood²⁴⁷⁶ with³³²⁶ them.⁸⁴⁶

6  As soon then as^{5613 3767} he had said²⁰³⁶ unto them,⁸⁴⁶ I¹⁴⁷³ am¹⁵¹⁰ he, they went⁵⁶⁵ backward,^{1519 3694} and²⁵³² fell⁴⁰⁹⁸ to the ground.⁵⁴⁷⁶

7  Then³⁷⁶⁷ asked¹⁹⁰⁵ he them⁸⁴⁶ again,³⁸²⁵ Whom⁵¹⁰¹ seek²²¹² ye? And¹¹⁶¹ they³⁵⁸⁸ said,²⁰³⁶ Jesus²⁴²⁴ of Nazareth.³⁴⁸⁰

8  Jesus²⁴²⁴ answered,⁶¹¹ I have told²⁰³⁶ you⁵²¹³ that³⁷⁵⁴ I¹⁴⁷³ am¹⁵¹⁰ he: if¹⁴⁸⁷ therefore³⁷⁶⁷ ye seek²²¹² me,¹⁶⁹¹ let⁸⁶³ these⁵¹²⁸ go their way:⁵²¹⁷

9  That²⁴⁴³ the³⁵⁸⁸ saying³⁰⁵⁶ might be fulfilled,⁴¹³⁷ which³⁷³⁹ he spake,²⁰³⁶ Of¹⁵³⁷ them⁸⁴⁶ which³⁷³⁹ thou gavest¹³²⁵ me³⁴²⁷ have³⁷⁵⁶ I lost⁶²² none.³⁷⁶²

10  Then³⁷⁶⁷ Simon⁴⁶¹³ Peter⁴⁰⁷⁴ having²¹⁹² a sword³¹⁶² drew¹⁶⁷⁰ it,⁸⁴⁶ and²⁵³² smote³⁸¹⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ high priest's⁷⁴⁹ servant,¹⁴⁰¹ and²⁵³² cut off⁶⁰⁹ his⁸⁴⁶ right¹¹⁸⁸ ear.^{5621 1161} The³⁵⁸⁸ servant's¹⁴⁰¹ name³⁶⁸⁶ was²²⁵⁸ Malchus.³¹²⁴

11  Then³⁷⁶⁷ said²⁰³⁶ Jesus²⁴²⁴ unto Peter,⁴⁰⁷⁴ Put up⁹⁰⁶ thy⁴⁶⁷⁵ sword³¹⁶² into¹⁵¹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ sheath:²³³⁶ the³⁵⁸⁸ cup⁴²²¹ which³⁷³⁹ my Father³⁹⁶² hath given¹³²⁵ me,³⁴²⁷ shall I not³³⁶⁴ drink⁴⁰⁹⁵ it?⁸⁴⁶

12  Then³⁷⁶⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ band⁴⁶⁸⁶ and²⁵³² the³⁵⁸⁸ captain⁵⁵⁰⁶ and²⁵³² officers⁵²⁵⁷ of the³⁵⁸⁸ Jews²⁴⁵³ took⁴⁸¹⁵ Jesus,²⁴²⁴ and²⁵³² bound¹²¹⁰ him,⁸⁴⁶

13  And²⁵³² led him away^{520 846} to⁴³¹⁴ Annas⁴⁵² first;⁴⁴¹² for¹⁰⁶³ he was²²⁵⁸ father in law³⁹⁹⁵ to Caiaphas,²⁵³³ which³⁷³⁹ was²²⁵⁸ the high priest⁷⁴⁹ that same¹⁵⁶⁵ year.¹⁷⁶³

14  Now¹¹⁶¹ Caiaphas²⁵³³ was²²⁵⁸ he,³⁵⁸⁸ which gave counsel⁴⁸²³ to the³⁵⁸⁸ Jews,²⁴⁵³ that³⁷⁵⁴ it was expedient⁴⁸⁵¹ that one¹⁵²⁰ man⁴⁴⁴ should die⁶²² for⁵²²⁸ the³⁵⁸⁸ people.²⁹⁹²

15  And¹¹⁶¹ Simon⁴⁶¹³ Peter⁴⁰⁷⁴ followed¹⁹⁰ Jesus,²⁴²⁴ and²⁵³² so did another²⁴³ disciple:^{3101 1161} that¹⁵⁶⁵ disciple³¹⁰¹ was²²⁵⁸ known¹¹¹⁰ unto the³⁵⁸⁸ high priest,⁷⁴⁹ and²⁵³² went in with⁴⁸⁹⁷ Jesus²⁴²⁴ into¹⁵¹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ palace⁸³³ of the³⁵⁸⁸ high priest.⁷⁴⁹

16  But¹¹⁶¹ Peter⁴⁰⁷⁴ stood²⁴⁷⁶ at⁴³¹⁴ the³⁵⁸⁸ door²³⁷⁴ without.¹⁸⁵⁴ Then³⁷⁶⁷ went out¹⁸³¹ that other²⁴³ disciple,³¹⁰¹ which³⁷³⁹ was²²⁵⁸ known¹¹¹⁰ unto the³⁵⁸⁸ high priest,⁷⁴⁹ and²⁵³² spake²⁰³⁶ unto her that kept the door,²³⁷⁷ and²⁵³² brought in¹⁵²¹ Peter.⁴⁰⁷⁴

17  Then³⁷⁶⁷ saith³⁰⁰⁴ the³⁵⁸⁸ damsel³⁸¹⁴ that kept the door²³⁷⁷ unto Peter,⁴⁰⁷⁴ Art¹⁴⁸⁸ not³³⁶¹ thou⁴⁷⁷¹ also²⁵³² one of¹⁵³⁷ this⁵¹²⁷ man's⁴⁴⁴ disciples?³¹⁰¹ He¹⁵⁶⁵ saith,³⁰⁰⁴ I am¹⁵¹⁰ not.³⁷⁵⁶

18  And¹¹⁶¹ the³⁵⁸⁸ servants¹⁴⁰¹ and²⁵³² officers⁵²⁵⁷ stood²⁴⁷⁶ there, who had made⁴¹⁶⁰ a fire of coals;⁴³⁹ for³⁷⁵⁴ it was²²⁵⁸ cold:⁵⁵⁹² and²⁵³² they warmed²³²⁸ themselves: and¹¹⁶¹ Peter⁴⁰⁷⁴ stood^{2258 2476} with³³²⁶ them,⁸⁴⁶ and²⁵³² warmed²³²⁸ himself.

19  The³⁵⁸⁸ high priest⁷⁴⁹ then³⁷⁶⁷ asked²⁰⁶⁵ Jesus²⁴²⁴ of⁴⁰¹² his⁸⁴⁶ disciples,³¹⁰¹ and²⁵³² of⁴⁰¹² his⁸⁴⁶ doctrine.¹³²²

20  Jesus²⁴²⁴ answered⁶¹¹ him,⁸⁴⁶ I¹⁴⁷³ spake²⁹⁸⁰ openly³⁹⁵⁴ to the³⁵⁸⁸ world;²⁸⁸⁹ I¹⁴⁷³ ever³⁸⁴² taught¹³²¹ in¹⁷²² the³⁵⁸⁸ synagogue,⁴⁸⁶⁴ and²⁵³² in¹⁷²² the³⁵⁸⁸ temple,²⁴¹¹ whither³⁶⁹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ Jews²⁴⁵³ always³⁸⁴² resort;⁴⁹⁰⁵ and²⁵³² in¹⁷²² secret²⁹²⁷ have I said²⁹⁸⁰ nothing.³⁷⁵²

21  Why⁵¹⁰¹ askest¹⁹⁰⁵ thou me?¹⁹⁰⁵ ask¹⁹⁰⁵ them which heard¹⁹¹ me, what⁵¹⁰¹ I have said²⁹⁸⁰ unto them:⁸⁴⁶ behold,²³⁹⁶ they³⁷⁷⁸ know¹⁴⁹² what³⁷³⁹ I¹⁴⁷³ said.²⁰³⁶

22  And¹¹⁶¹ when he⁸⁴⁶ had thus⁵⁰²³ spoken,²⁰³⁶ one¹⁵²⁰ of the³⁵⁸⁸ officers⁵²⁵⁷ which stood by³⁹³⁶ struck Jesus with the palm of his hand,^{1325 2424 4475} saying,²⁰³⁶ Answerest⁶¹¹ thou the³⁵⁸⁸ high priest⁷⁴⁹ so?³⁷⁷⁹

23  Jesus²⁴²⁴ answered⁶¹¹ him,⁸⁴⁶ If¹⁴⁸⁷ I have spoken²⁹⁸⁰ evil,²⁵⁶⁰ bear witness³¹⁴⁰ of⁴⁰¹² the³⁵⁸⁸ evil:²⁵⁵⁶ but¹¹⁶¹ if¹⁴⁸⁷ well,²⁵⁷³ why⁵¹⁰¹ smitest¹¹⁹⁴ thou me?³¹⁶⁵

24  Now Annas⁴⁵² had sent⁶⁴⁹ him⁸⁴⁶ bound¹²¹⁰ unto⁴³¹⁴ Caiaphas²⁵³³ the³⁵⁸⁸ high priest.⁷⁴⁹

25  And Simon⁴⁶¹³ Peter⁴⁰⁷⁴ stood^{2258 2476} and²⁵³² warmed²³²⁸ himself. They said²⁰³⁶ therefore³⁷⁶⁷ unto him,⁸⁴⁶ Art¹⁴⁸⁸ not³³⁶¹ thou⁴⁷⁷¹ also²⁵³² one of¹⁵³⁷ his⁸⁴⁶ disciples?³¹⁰¹ He¹⁵⁶⁵ denied⁷²⁰ it, and²⁵³² said,²⁰³⁶ I am¹⁵¹⁰ not.³⁷⁵⁶

26  One¹⁵²⁰ of¹⁵³⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ servants¹⁴⁰¹ of the³⁵⁸⁸ high priest,⁷⁴⁹ being⁵⁶⁰⁷ his kinsman⁴⁷⁷³ whose³⁷³⁹ ear⁵⁶²¹ Peter⁴⁰⁷⁴ cut off,⁶⁰⁹ saith,³⁰⁰⁴ Did not³⁷⁵⁶ I¹⁴⁷³ see¹⁴⁹² thee⁴⁵⁷¹ in¹⁷²² the³⁵⁸⁸ garden²⁷⁷⁹ with³³²⁶ him?⁸⁴⁶

27  Peter⁴⁰⁷⁴ then³⁷⁶⁷ denied⁷²⁰ again:³⁸²⁵ and²⁵³² immediately²¹¹² the cock²²⁰ crew.⁵⁴⁵⁵

28  Then³⁷⁶⁷ led⁷¹ they Jesus²⁴²⁴ from⁵⁷⁵ Caiaphas²⁵³³ unto¹⁵¹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ hall of judgment:⁴²³² and¹¹⁶¹ it was²²⁵⁸ early;⁴⁴⁰⁵ and²⁵³² they⁸⁴⁶ themselves went¹⁵²⁵ not³⁷⁵⁶ into¹⁵¹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ judgment hall,⁴²³² lest³³⁶³ they should be defiled;³³⁹² but²³⁵ that²⁴⁴³ they might eat⁵³¹⁵ the³⁵⁸⁸ passover.³⁹⁵⁷

29  Pilate⁴⁰⁹¹ then³⁷⁶⁷ went out¹⁸³¹ unto⁴³¹⁴ them,⁸⁴⁶ and²⁵³² said,²⁰³⁶ What⁵¹⁰¹ accusation²⁷²⁴ bring⁵³⁴² ye against²⁵⁹⁶ this⁵¹²⁷ man?⁴⁴⁴

30  They answered⁶¹¹ and²⁵³² said²⁰³⁶ unto him,⁸⁴⁶ If¹⁴⁸⁷ he³⁷⁷⁸ were²²⁵⁸ not³³⁶¹ a malefactor,²⁵⁵⁵ we would not³⁷⁵⁶ have³⁰² delivered him up^{3860 846} unto thee.⁴⁶⁷¹

31  Then³⁷⁶⁷ said²⁰³⁶ Pilate⁴⁰⁹¹ unto them,⁸⁴⁶ Take²⁹⁸³ ye⁵²¹⁰ him,⁸⁴⁶ and²⁵³² judge²⁹¹⁹ him⁸⁴⁶ according²⁵⁹⁶ to your⁵²¹⁶ law.³⁵⁵¹ The³⁵⁸⁸ Jews²⁴⁵³ therefore³⁷⁶⁷ said²⁰³⁶ unto him,⁸⁴⁶ It is not lawful^{1832 3756} for us²²⁵⁴ to put any man to death:^{615 3762}

32  That²⁴⁴³ the³⁵⁸⁸ saying³⁰⁵⁶ of Jesus²⁴²⁴ might be fulfilled,⁴¹³⁷ which³⁷³⁹ he spake,²⁰³⁶ signifying⁴⁵⁹¹ what⁴¹⁶⁹ death²²⁸⁸ he should³¹⁹⁵ die.⁵⁹⁹

33  Then³⁷⁶⁷ Pilate⁴⁰⁹¹ entered¹⁵²⁵ into¹⁵¹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ judgment hall⁴²³² again,³⁸²⁵ and²⁵³² called⁵⁴⁵⁵ Jesus,²⁴²⁴ and²⁵³² said²⁰³⁶ unto him,⁸⁴⁶ Art¹⁴⁸⁸ thou⁴⁷⁷¹ the³⁵⁸⁸ King⁹³⁵ of the³⁵⁸⁸ Jews?²⁴⁵³

34  Jesus²⁴²⁴ answered⁶¹¹ him,⁸⁴⁶ Sayest³⁰⁰⁴ thou⁴⁷⁷¹ this thing⁵¹²⁴ of⁵⁷⁵ thyself,¹⁴³⁸ or²²²⁸ did others²⁴³ tell²⁰³⁶ it thee⁴⁶⁷¹ of⁴⁰¹² me?¹⁷⁰⁰

35  Pilate⁴⁰⁹¹ answered,^{611 3385} Am¹⁵¹⁰ I¹⁴⁷³ a Jew?²⁴⁵³ Thine own⁴⁶⁷⁴ nation¹⁴⁸⁴ and²⁵³² the³⁵⁸⁸ chief priests⁷⁴⁹ have delivered³⁸⁶⁰ thee⁴⁵⁷¹ unto me:¹⁶⁹⁸ what⁵¹⁰¹ hast thou done?⁴¹⁶⁰

36  Jesus²⁴²⁴ answered,⁶¹¹ My¹⁶⁹⁹ kingdom⁹³² is²⁰⁷⁶ not³⁷⁵⁶ of¹⁵³⁷ this⁵¹²⁷ world:²⁸⁸⁹ if¹⁴⁸⁷ my¹⁶⁹⁹ kingdom⁹³² were²²⁵⁸ of¹⁵³⁷ this⁵¹²⁷ world,²⁸⁸⁹ then would my¹⁶⁹⁹ servants⁵²⁵⁷ fight,^{75 302} that²⁴⁴³ I should not³³⁶¹ be delivered³⁸⁶⁰ to the³⁵⁸⁸ Jews:²⁴⁵³ but¹¹⁶¹ now³⁵⁶⁸ is²⁰⁷⁶ my¹⁶⁹⁹ kingdom⁹³² not³⁷⁵⁶ from hence.¹⁷⁸²

37  Pilate⁴⁰⁹¹ therefore³⁷⁶⁷ said²⁰³⁶ unto him,⁸⁴⁶ Art¹⁴⁸⁸ thou⁴⁷⁷¹ a king⁹³⁵ then?³⁷⁶⁶ Jesus²⁴²⁴ answered,⁶¹¹ Thou⁴⁷⁷¹ sayest³⁰⁰⁴ that³⁷⁵⁴ I¹⁴⁷³ am¹⁵¹⁰ a king.⁹³⁵ To¹⁵¹⁹ this end⁵¹²⁴ was I¹⁴⁷³ born,¹⁰⁸⁰ and²⁵³² for¹⁵¹⁹ this cause⁵¹²⁴ came²⁰⁶⁴ I into¹⁵¹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ world,²⁸⁸⁹ that²⁴⁴³ I should bear witness³¹⁴⁰ unto the³⁵⁸⁸ truth.²²⁵ Every one³⁹⁵⁶ that is⁵⁶⁰⁷ of¹⁵³⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ truth²²⁵ heareth¹⁹¹ my³⁴⁵⁰ voice.⁵⁴⁵⁶

38  Pilate⁴⁰⁹¹ saith³⁰⁰⁴ unto him,⁸⁴⁶ What⁵¹⁰¹ is²⁰⁷⁶ truth?²²⁵ And²⁵³² when he had said²⁰³⁶ this,⁵¹²⁴ he went out¹⁸³¹ again³⁸²⁵ unto⁴³¹⁴ the³⁵⁸⁸ Jews,²⁴⁵³ and²⁵³² saith³⁰⁰⁴ unto them,⁸⁴⁶ I¹⁴⁷³ find²¹⁴⁷ in¹⁷²² him⁸⁴⁶ no³⁷⁶² fault¹⁵⁶ at all.

39  But¹¹⁶¹ ye⁵²¹³ have²⁰⁷⁶ a custom,⁴⁹¹⁴ that²⁴⁴³ I should release⁶³⁰ unto you⁵²¹³ one¹⁵²⁰ at¹⁷²² the³⁵⁸⁸ passover:³⁹⁵⁷ will¹⁰¹⁴ ye therefore³⁷⁶⁷ that I release⁶³⁰ unto you⁵²¹³ the³⁵⁸⁸ King⁹³⁵ of the³⁵⁸⁸ Jews?²⁴⁵³

40  Then³⁷⁶⁷ cried²⁹⁰⁵ they all³⁹⁵⁶ again,³⁸²⁵ saying,³⁰⁰⁴ Not³³⁶¹ this man,⁵¹²⁶ but²³⁵ Barabbas.⁹¹² Now¹¹⁶¹ Barabbas⁹¹² was²²⁵⁸ a robber.³⁰²⁷

7 Iterum ergo interrogavit eos: Quem quæritis? Illi autem dixerunt: Jesum Nazarenum.

8 Respondit Jesus: Dixi vobis, quia ego sum: si ergo me quæritis, sinite hos abire.

9 Ut impleretur sermo, quem dixit: Quia quos dedisti mihi, non perdidi ex eis quemquam.

10 Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium eduxit eum: et percussit pontificis servum, et abscidit auriculam ejus dexteram. Erat autem nomen servo Malchus.

11 Dixit ergo Jesus Petro: Mitte gladium tuum in vaginam. Calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, non bibam illum?

12 Cohors ergo, et tribunus, et ministri Judæorum comprehenderunt Jesum, et ligaverunt eum.

13 Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum: erat enim socer Caiphæ, qui erat pontifex anni illius.

14 Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Judæis: Quia expedit unum hominem mori pro populo.

15 Sequebatur autem Jesum Simon Petrus, et alius discipulus. Discipulus autem ille erat notus pontifici, et introivit cum Jesu in atrium pontificis.

16 Petrus autem stabat ad ostium foris. Exivit ergo discipulus alius, qui erat notus pontifici, et dixit ostiariæ: et introduxit Petrum.

17 Dicit ergo Petro ancilla ostiaria: Numquid et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius? Dicit ille: Non sum.

18 Stabant autem servi et ministri ad prunas, quia frigus erat, et calefaciebant se: erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans, et calefaciens se.

19 Pontifex ergo interrogavit Jesum de discipulis suis, et de doctrina ejus.

20 Respondit ei Jesus: Ego palam locutus sum mundo: ego semper docui in synagoga, et in templo, quo omnes Judæi conveniunt, et in occulto locutus sum nihil.

21 Quid me interrogas? interroga eos qui audierunt quid locutus sim ipsis: ecce hi sciunt quæ dixerim ego.

22 Hæc autem cum dixisset, unus assistens ministrorum dedit alapam Jesu, dicens: Sic respondes pontifici?

23 Respondit ei Jesus: Si male locutus sum, testimonium perhibe de malo: si autem bene, quid me cædis?

24 Et misit eum Annas ligatum ad Caipham pontificem.

25 Erat autem Simon Petrus stans, et calefaciens se. Dixerunt ergo ei: Numquid et tu ex discipulis ejus es? Negavit ille, et dixit: Non sum.

26 Dicit ei unus ex servis pontificis, cognatus ejus, cujus abscidit Petrus auriculam: Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo?

27 Iterum ergo negavit Petrus: et statim gallus cantavit.

28 Adducunt ergo Jesum a Caipha in prætorium. Erat autem mane: et ipsi non introierunt in prætorium, ut non contaminarentur, sed ut manducarent Pascha.

29 Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras, et dixit: Quam accusationem affertis adversus hominem hunc?

30 Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: Si non esset hic malefactor, non tibi tradidissemus eum.

31 Dixit ergo eis Pilatus: Accipite eum vos, et secundum legem vestram judicate eum. Dixerunt ergo ei Judæi: Nobis non licet interficere quemquam.

32 Ut sermo Jesu impleretur, quem dixit, significans qua morte esset moriturus.

33 Introivit ergo iterum in prætorium Pilatus: et vocavit Jesum, et dixit ei: Tu es rex Judæorum?

34 Respondit Jesus: A temetipso hoc dicis, an alii dixerunt tibi de me?

35 Respondit Pilatus: Numquid ego Judæus sum? gens tua et pontifices tradiderunt te mihi: quid fecisti?

36 Respondit Jesus: Regnum meum non est de hoc mundo. Si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum, ministri mei utique decertarent ut non traderer Judæis: nunc autem regnum meum non est hinc.

37 Dixit itaque ei Pilatus: Ergo rex es tu? Respondit Jesus: Tu dicis quia rex sum ego. Ego in hoc natus sum, et ad hoc veni in mundum, ut testimonium perhibeam veritati: omnis qui est ex veritate, audit vocem meam.

38 Dicit ei Pilatus: Quid est veritas? Et cum hoc dixisset, iterum exivit ad Judæos, et dicit eis: Ego nullam invenio in eo causam.

39 Est autem consuetudo vobis ut unum dimittam vobis in Pascha: vultis ergo dimittam vobis regem Judæorum?

40 Clamaverunt ergo rursum omnes, dicentes: Non hunc, sed Barabbam. Erat autem Barabbas latro.
